SOULSTICE EVENT HISTORY

The Soulstice was event born out of an idea driving back with friends a few years ago. The idea was to get a friendly crowd of people together, that would appreciate SOUL/JAZZ music in the Berkshire area, and the spirit of such an event, but also trying tosome decent money where possible for a local charities too. Originally discussed over many a pint or at local Reading games, it finally came to fruition when local wine bar Redheads in Theale, and thanks to it’s manager Lee Pitcher, took the plunge and hosted it’s first Soulstice night back in March 2009. The first DJ’s then were Andy Coles. Konrad Norvid, and Pete Sinclair, all loyal Soul fans. With a gentle plug from internet Soul DJ Chris Beggs we managed to get 67 people including friends and family through the door and the first night was a relative success!

The second Soulstice a short time later, saw the introduction of another friend and fellow DJ to the team, Ian Bourne, utilising his better equipment, and also having guest dj’s for the first time .Through further word of mouth and more internet plugs, a bigger crowd of nearly 90 came along. By the time we got to Soulstice 4, we were having proper lists of attendees, and sell outs became a regular occurrence. Always drawing on the available local talent of dj’s from the Soul/Jazz fraternity in the Thames Valley, it grew from strength to strength.

Unfortunately Redheads closed in January 2009, and the last even,Soulstice 7 ,was a huge success going on until nearly 2.30am with a packed house and a few extras having to be squeezed in that evening. The decision was made to move on and a new home was found. So since March 2010 we have been at Caversham Working Men’s Club, in Church Street Caversham Reading. A brilliant venue with a great feel, cheap bar and great staff to go alongside the 150+ people who regularly fill the Soulstice night every 6-8 weeks. It has become the events spiritual home since, and now wiover 2 dozen evenunder our belt, long may it continue! As a way of thanks too, a free CD of top tunes has been provided to the first 30 people through the door, and this has now expanded to include a guest CD too…all of these are fast becoming collectors items!

DJ’s now featured within the Soulstice regular family are Ian Bourne, Pete Sinclair, Steve O’Mahoney, Jim Day, Paul Goodwin, Mole, Steiner and Andy Coles…with special guests appearing such as Chris Beggs, Mark Whiffin, Sean French, Mark Prince, Kev Tubbs Thomas ,The Newbury Crew, Andy Beggs and others. We also have Soulstice regulars who, from time to time, get a little guest slot and fill the floor with their favourite tunes too. Without these people and of course all our loyal regulars, the nights just wouldn’t be the same. It has become what it was meant to be  – TOP TUNES FOR TOP PEOPLE!

We have just celebrated the 4rd Anniversary, in March 2013, of this great event – Local charities have now benefited to the tune of over £12000 -  The entrance fee of just £5 has gone towards some great causes since we began , and will continue to do so. We are always looking to find worthy local charities so get in touch if you feel there are any worthwhile….

So come along  – you’ll have a cracking night and lets look forward to the NEXT 4 years of great Soul nights – BUT BOOK EARLY!!
