Andy ColesFrom the moment my elder brother came into the house with a copy of Dr Buzzard and the Savannah Band LP and played ‘I’ll Play The Fool” I was hooked. At 13 years of age when everyone at school was listening to Genesis, Queen, progressive Rock and Pop, I heard a sound that changed me…Soul and Dance music!

I started going at an early age to local Theale Football Club discos with my brother and listening to Barry White, Shalamar, Candi Staton, and then after attending the Calcot Hotel disco nights on Monday’s & Thursday’s became hooked. Listening to Robbie Vincent and Greg Edwards on the radio before going out on a Saturday, and going to the Brittania Tap lunchtimes to listen to Andy Gill got me totally hooked on Soul, Dance, Disco and then Jazz.

Buying records in the local shops and then venturing to London to get the latest cut-outs from Bluebird Records, City Sounds and then specialist Jazz from Ray’s and Mole Jazz, before coming home to go to the Windsor Safari Park nights, Wheelers, Bensons, The Rio, and Dingwalls to name but a few. Organising coach trips to Brighton, The Goldmine, Ronnie Scotts, The Bass Clef, and then the all-dayers and weekenders throughout the country.

My DJ early days consisted of starting the Wycombe Road parties and the Doos at the Squash Club in Caversham in Reading, along with tons of house parties and various private soul nights.

The Soulstice event came around after one evening, sitting in the pub with my best mate, wondering where we could hear the tunes we used to love in the clubs, but didn’t really hear anymore. We decided to get a venue , Redheads Wine Bar in Theale) and have a go at promoting our own Soul Music Event – Over 4 years later, with more than 30 event nights, and our new spiritual home at Caversham Working Men’s Club in Reading, Soulstice is as strong as ever, and growing stronger – and we have raised over £12 000 for Charity so far to boot! Alongside the resident DJ’s and special guests each time, we play the best in Soul and Jazz to keep your feet moving.

I am still heavily influenced by Gilles Peterson, Richard Searling and Bob Jones to name but a few, I love to play Modern Soul and Dancefloor Jazz, heavily influenced with a Latin beat and Chill-out tunes with an eclectic feel. I still love to hear records that have escaped me over the years and new sounds along the way…and I am collecting vinyl again!

Tune in to the ‘INSPIRED’ show Friday nights from 7.30-9.30 pm and join me in the chat room – See you there
