Jay Bee first got into Soul music in the late 70’s, as a result of listening to 7” & 12” Records that his older brother was buying. Titles that stood out back then were Janet Kaye’s “Silly Games”, Third World’s “Now That We Found Love”, Hi Tension’s “British Hustle” and The Brother Johnson’s “Stomp” Ska and Reggae was also a big favourite for him at the time.
As soon as Jay Bee was working and able to buy his own tunes, he started to add 12” singles to his own collection that started with artists such as D-Train, The Limit, Princess and so on.
Living on the South Coast meant Jay really didn’t have many good black music stations to tune into – Radio station Laser 558 was about the only one, so after trying a few heftier antennae to plug in to the back of his old Stereo System, he discovered that he was just about able to pick up Radio London’s signal, albeit a bit patchy even on a good day!
Jay Bee’s first broadcast was a collaboration with “Tee” on community station Jamm FM 105, a two hour Soul Show every Sunday during the summer of 1992. He also went on to have successful shows on Trouble FM playing 70’s 80’s soul along with some nice early 90’s garage house.
From there, it was on to Reallove Radio, an Internet Radio station, and where the title “Love & Happiness” was born as a title for his shows. This was a weekly two hour late set on Thursday nights from 10pm, before he moved to the weekend Sunday broadcast.
Jay Bee currently DJ’s as a guest at the Port Soul Alldayer’s in Port Solent, Hampshire and his Love & Happiness show on Soulstice Radio 24, currently a once a month guest show, reflects Jay’s Soulful taste in 70’s and Modern-Soul, as well as forays into some Funky Jazz, Reggae and Soulful House
